After Castle Found-Object Stool, 2025

A found-object furniture study inspired by Wendell Castle’s sculptural approach to furniture. The project began with the image of a Castle table reproduced on the cover of Furniture by Wendell Castle (Hudson Hills Press, 1989), which became a formal reference for the stool’s clustered base and unconventional support structure.

The stool combines repurposed and thrifted materials, including vintage 1950s upholstery fabric, turned wood elements, salvaged hardware, ornament components, binder clips, and small cart wheels. Rather than reproducing a specific Castle design, the piece uses his vocabulary of playful massing, sculptural furniture, and unexpected structural relationships as a point of departure, translating those ideas through reused materials and improvised construction.
